Moldovita Monastery, "Annunciation" Church

The Moldovita Monastery, one of the oldest monastic settlements, with an important and glorious historical past, is located in the village of Vatra Moldovitei (15 km from Vama) and was built by the Moldavian ruler Petru Rares in 1532. The interior paintings, finished five years after the church was built, are an exceptional artistic document of that period.

The large and vivid Siege of Constantinople frescoes were inspired by a poem dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as a thanksgiving for her intervention in saving Constantinople from a Persian attack.

The predominantly gold and deep blue paintings on the exterior walls were finally completed in 1537.

Another impressive representation depicts the Tree of Jesse, representing Jesus Christ’s genealogy - during the Middle Ages a widespread theme in Europe.
