Day 2

Bus Sibiu – Balea Lake (~91km)

.

Today we leave Sibiu and we’ll take the road to the majestic Fagaras Mts. The Transfagarasan Alpine Road is Romania’s most impressive, best-known road and one of the country’s most popular tourist highlights. The windy road north scene is little short of spectacular at its top: Balea Lake (2.040 m altitude), a glacial lake offering beautiful views of the wide open valley below. In 2006, the first "ice hotel" in Eastern Europe was built in the vicinity of the Balea glacier lake. The 90 km of twists and turns run across the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mts, reaching at its highest point an altitude of 2,034 metres, it will prove to be quite a drive; chances are all your friends will find out about the rush of the ride almost instantly.

.

AccommodationWe’ll spend the night at Balea Lake, having in front of our eyes the beautiful glacier lake surrounded by the mountains.

Day 3

Hiker Balea Lake – Paltinu – Capra

.

.

.This day is dedicated to an easy hike, meant to prepare us for the next day challenges. We will climb to Saua Doamnei (“Lady’s Saddle”, 2.198 m alt.) and then descend in the homonym valley. Along the way we will be rewarded with great views of the Balea Lake and the high peaks surrounding us: Paltinu (2.401 m alt.), Capra (2.417 m alt.) and more. The day ends with stories & good fun, warmed by a hot cup of tea.

 .

AccommodationOvernight at Balea Lake.

Day 4

Hiker The taste of the wild!

.

.
And now it’s time to feel the real taste of the Fagaras Mountains. For today we’ve planned a route that will show you beautiful lakes, high altitude trails and mountains… mountains… as far as the eye can see. High alpine pastures, majestic ridges, fast flowing streams with crystal clear water, trails offering panoramic views. It’s worth all the effort…they don’t name the Fagaras Mts the Alps of Transylvania for nothing. Then, we’ll descend at Podragu hut (2.136 m alt.), where it is very likely you’ll fall asleep in a second.

 .

AccommodationOvernight at Podragu hut (2136 m alt.)

Day 5

Hiker Moldoveanu Peak

.

Finally the big day has come! Today we will ascend the trail and reach the Moldoveanu Peak, the highest peak in Romania (2.544 m alt.). If weather will be on our side, below the high peaks we should see the famous blanket of clouds, typical for high mountains. But that’s really not all. Today you have the chance to be the guides. We’ll have a friendly chat about how to choose the route, how to walk on the trails and how to recognize the landmarks that we see along the way. From Moldoveanu Peak we’ll descend the ridge trail and head to the Vistea mountain (2.310 m alt.); the refuge will be our resting place for the night.

 .

AccommodationOvernight at Vistea refuge.
