Viscri

The fortified Evangelical Church situated in Viscri village / Buneşti commune, Braşov County, was built on a romanesque chapel belonging to the Szekler population and dating from the 1100-1120 AD.

The church was taken over by the Saxons at the end of XIIth century and was fortified starting the XVIth century.

The 300 year old organ, the original painted shrine, the old benches, the tower and the museum are among its attractions.

Apart from the fortified church, you may enjoy the village, with its strong Saxon community which resisted to so many barbarian attacks along the centuries and fights to preserve the rich heritage of their ancestor’s land ("Siebenbuergen, alte Heimat"). Their efforts have been sustained by Charles, Prince of Wales, who is enraptured with the unspoiled natural beauties of Transylvania. Starting with 2006, the Prince of Wales bought and restored XVIIIth century Saxon houses in Viscri (the "Blue House"), and other properties, in order to support and protect this unique way of life and bring sustainable tourism into the region; he visits privately each year the "last corner of Europe where you see true sustainability and complete resilience".
